How to specify a data-center cabinet

To specify a data-center cabinet, define eight things: rack-unit height, width, depth, load rating, door and airflow type, mounting-rail depth, access and security, and power and cooling. Get those right and the rest, colour, baying and cable management, follows.

1. Rack-unit height (U)

Height is measured in rack units (U), where 1U = 44.45 mm. Standard data-center racks are 42U or 47U; taller 48–51U frames exist for high-capacity or colocation use. Choose the height by the equipment you need to mount plus room for PDUs, cable management and airflow.

2. Width

Standard widths are 600 mm and 800 mm. The 19-inch mounting space is the same; the extra 200 mm on an 800 mm cabinet is side space for vertical cable management and PDUs. Choose 800 mm for dense cabling and per-tenant power, 600 mm to maximise floor efficiency.

3. Depth

Depth must fit your deepest server plus cable-management and PDU clearance at the rear. Common depths are 1000, 1200 and 1400 mm. Depth-adjustable mounting rails let you position equipment planes precisely inside that envelope.

  • 1000 mm: network and shallow equipment
  • 1200 mm: general server deployments (most common)
  • 1400 mm: deep servers, rear PDUs and heavy cabling

4. Load rating

Static load is the weight a cabinet holds standing still; dynamic load is what it can carry while being moved or shipped loaded. Standard racks are typically designed for around 1500 kg static; welded high-load cabinets reach 2500 kg static / 1800 kg dynamic. Match the rating to fully-populated equipment weight with margin.

5. Doors & airflow

An 80% perforated (mesh) door is the default for air-cooled equipment because it maximises front-to-back airflow. Solid or glass doors suit low-airflow or display use. For high-density loads, rack-door cooling handles heat at the cabinet. A reversible hinge lets you set door swing to suit the aisle.

6. Mounting rails

Four 19-inch EIA rails carry the equipment. Depth-adjustable rails, ideally in fine (25 mm) increments, let you set the mounting plane for deep servers, rear PDUs and cable arms without compromise.

7. Access & security

A 3-point latch is standard. For controlled or multi-tenant environments, add electronic locks or RFID access with audit trails, and per-compartment locking for colocation bays.

8. Power & cooling

Specify PDUs by phase, sockets and intelligence, metered or switched PDUs enable per-tenant billing and remote control. For dense heat, integrate rack-door cooling. Fitting power and cooling with the cabinet at the factory avoids on-site integration work.
